Israel acted unilaterally by launching Operation Yoav on October 15, 1948, sweeping most of the Egyptian forces out of the Negev, leaving four thousand Egyptian troops surrounded in the Faluja pocket.A frustrated UK PM Bevin now joined Marshall in drafting Security Council resolutions calling for the immediate withdrawal of Israeli forces. Bevin insisted that the draft resolution must include a threat that failure of any party – meaning Israel, of course - to withdraw to the 14 October lines would subject the violator to UN sanctions Bevin’s plot to steal the Negev may have been thwarted, but his obsessive wish to crush the Jewish state led him to order the Royal Air Force based in Egypt into the skies of the Sinai Desert in January 1949. In an earlier talk, the fledgling Israeli air force shot down 5 British Spitfires with no losses.The role of an American Gentile, James G McDonald, in standing up to the British Labour government, and in particular in standing up to foreign minister Ernest Bevin was instrumental to the recapture of the Negev desert.·

Between 1919 and 1933, McDonald was chairman of the Foreign Policy Association, which was dedicated to inspiring the American public to learn more about the world and to participate in the foreign policy process. In 1933, McDonald was appointed to chair the High Commission for Refugees (Jewish and Others) Coming from Germany, which was affiliated to the League of Nations.
