The Great Smog of London

The Great Smog of London, also known as the Big Smoke, was a severe air pollution event that occurred in December 1952. A combination of cold weather, stagnant air, and an increased use of coal led to the formation of a thick layer of smog that blanketed the city for several days. The smog significantly reduced visibility, disrupted transportation, and led to widespread health issues. It is estimated that the smog caused the deaths of around 4,000 people, with later studies suggesting the toll might have been higher. The disaster led to increased awareness of air pollution and eventually resulted in the Clean Air Act of 1956, which aimed to reduce air pollution and prevent future incidents.
