One night, Bertolf had his servants strangle Godelieva and throw her body into a pond to make it appear as though she had drowned accidentally. This occurred around 1070.

Saint Godelieva's martyrdom for her faith and her patience under suffering led to her veneration as a saint. Miracles were reported at her tomb, and she became known as a patroness of abused wives and those in difficult marriages. Her relics were enshrined in the church of Gistel, and her feast day is celebrated on July 6.
