Joseph Henry

Joseph Henry was a Scottish-American scientist whose inventions and discoveries in the fields of electromagnetism and magnetic induction helped launch the age of electrodynamics. Henry is best known for his work with electromagnets. In 1831 he built an electromagnet at the behest of Yale College that was able to lift more than 2,000 pounds, a very impressive feat at the time. Later Henry electromagnets were capable of suspending in excess of 3,500 pounds. Think about it, this was 30 years before the American civil war. While working with his powerful electromagnets, Henry first observed the electrical property of inductance. Henry served as First Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution where he developed what would eventually become the national weather service. The electrical unit of inductance, the Henry, is named in his honor. This material is supplemental for SOTW Electronics Module 1
