Gauntlet: Dark Legacy- PS2 Underrated Gem Gameplay Sample
This game is also on the Gamecube and Xbox.
Dark Legacy is essentially an expansion of Gauntlet Legends, which was the modern sequel to the classic Gauntlet titles. It was first released in the Arcades, and later ported to just about every console under the sun at the time. Dark Legacy has a few levels that carry over from Legends, but adds a number of new areas.
If you've never played Gauntlet Legends before, the best way I can describe it is that it plays like an arcade version of Baldur's Gate or Diablo. That's putting it loosely. It has a lot in common with other hack 'n slash RPG games, but stays away from going too far in-depth with weapons, armor, or items. Your character gains levels, like in an RPG, but there is no inventory system. It was an arcade game first, so it stays close to it's roots. That's not to say there isn't any depth, as others seem to claim, it's just made to be fast fun as opposed to being a long and engrossing experience like other RPGs.
The biggest complaint people seem to have with the game, is it's repetitive nature. Sure, there is a lot of repetition in the game, basically, you just kill everything that moves, but that doesn't mean that the game lacks any strategy. And if complaints of repetition are to be levied against this game, they should be levied against games like Baldur's Gate as well, which has just as much repetitive hacking and slashing. In the end, all that hacking and slashing is used to build your character's level up, and improve their stats, just like in any other RPG, and from what I can see, Gauntlet: Dark Legacy, despite not having quite as much depth as other RPGs, in many ways still qualifies as an RPG. It's what an RPG would look like if it was in the arcades, and hey, it started out as an arcade game.
Perhaps the best feature of the game is it's multiplayer appeal. I am playing it by myself, and enjoying it just fine, but the game supports up to four players simultaneously multiplayer it's biggest strength. I haven't beaten the game as of yet, and I've been playing it off and on for the last three days. If you still occasionally have your friends over for a game-night, you have a game that will keep you busy for weeks with friends. Most people just meet their friends online for a few rounds of Call of Duty, but if you're oldschool, and like having at least four sweaty, smelly bodies playing in the same room together, then pick this one up. Forget what the idiots who write reviews say about the game (they no doubt play alone, because no one wants to play with a pompous idiot who holds his own opinion so highly), this game is a blast while it lasts. It may get repetitive after a while, but playing with your friends will give this game a lot more life.
