Over the years, reports and news have always focused on the money coming into Africa as aid or loans, but little attention is given to the significant amounts of cash leaving Africa each year. Between 1980 and 2018, sub-Saharan Africa received nearly $2 trillion in foreign direct investment (FDI) and official development assistance (ODA).

However, during this same period, over $1 trillion flowed out of the continent illegally.
