Water faucet has fallen off for some reason

They say don't go chasing waterfalls. So I shouldn't chase what greets me early this morning: Water gushing like a waterfall from a pipe end that is now open, because for some reason the tap just fell off. Fortunately I find it in the dogs' drinking bowl just underneath it. And without turning off the water, I manage to screw in the tap whence it came. Made me wet all over but whatever, I'll survive, and the problem is taken care of. Not sure how much water was wasted; could be a lot unfortunately.
