Bush-honeysuckle Initial Mechanical Treatment (pt. 1) - Overview Pre-Treatment

This non-native species of honeysuckle is a shallow rooted species, but it is a prolific sprouter if roots are left untreated. Stems also have a habit of resprouting if they have enough contact with moist soil. In this series I will give an overview of the mechanical removal of bush-honeysuckle followed up with the stump-cut method of treatment using the herbicide “Tordon RTU”. I use this method because it has the least amount of non-target species damage and can be applied directly to the targeted plant. My method I believe gives the land-owner a thorough treatment with the least amount of collateral environmental damage.

Note: no matter what herbicide is being used, all labels should be closely read and followed. Protective gear should be used at all times when handling any herbicide.

My goal is to help land owners learn the tools needed to accomplish this task, and to compare and contrast the results of my treatment areas that have been done at different times of the year (shown in separate videos to follow). My hope is by providing video documentation of my results, researchers in this field can gather anecdotal data to help direct research studies that will help improve best management practices (BMP’s) when it comes to eliminating this invasive species from our forest floors.
