Strong Hydrothermal Explosion in Yellowstone Park this 07-23-24

Hydrothermal Explosion Temporarily Closes Biscuit Basin in Yellowstone National Park
Today, Tuesday, July 23, at approximately 10:19 a.m., a localized hydrothermal explosion occurred near Sapphire Pool in Biscuit Basin, located just north of Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park. The USGS has classified the eruption as "small" and has assured that the volcanic activity remains "in the background."
Biscuit Basin, including the parking lot and boardwalks, is temporarily closed for safety reasons. However, the Grand Loop Road remains open. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported and the extent of the damage is unknown at this time.
Park staff along with the USGS will monitor conditions and reopen the area once it is deemed safe. Importantly, no other monitoring data shows changes in the Yellowstone region, and today's explosion does not reflect a change in the volcanic system, which remains at normal levels of activity.
