Final Fantasy VII Remake is an action role-playing game developed and published by Square Enix. It was released for PlayStation 4 in April 2020 and is the first in a planned trilogy of games remaking the 1997 PlayStation game Final Fantasy VII. An enhanced version, titled Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, was released for PlayStation 5 and Windows in 2021.

The game is set in the dystopian cyberpunk metropolis of Midgar. Players take on the role of Cloud Strife, a former soldier turned mercenary who joins the eco-terrorist group AVALANCHE. Their mission is to fight against the Shinra Corporation, which is draining the planet’s life essence as an energy source. The gameplay combines real-time action with strategic role-playing elements.

The remake project is a reimagining of the original game, delving deeper into the world and characters. It features new gameplay systems inspired by the original title, with each game in the project offering a volume of content comparable to a standalone Final Fantasy game.

Final Fantasy VII Remake received positive reviews for its graphics, gameplay, narrative, and music. Critics particularly praised the expanded story and the updated battle system for its strategic elements and visual flourishes. The second game in the remake trilogy, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, was released in 2024.
