Intelligence staff for 2nd Battalion, Chernarus 17th Separate Light Rifle Brigade, was made aware that 48 hours previously a separatist mechanized rifle unit had taken over the village of Gavrilovka in Beketov. According to reports from local friendly agents, the separatists had begun a house by house search for documents that were stolen from a separatist command center in the village.

In fact, local agents had indeed stolen documents, and left them in a dead drop on the western side of the village. According to the agents, the data contained inside those documents were sensitive enough to explain the separatists' reaction to their disappearance.

Operations staff for the battalion put together a task force consisting of three truck-born light rifle squads, two BRDM scout cars, and two BRDM antitank vehicles. Operations staff also secured an Mi-24 gunship, as well as a pair of Su-25 ground interdiction fighters. The task force was issued orders to clear the village of Gavrilovka of separatist forces

The tactical plan for the attack was for 2nd Squad and 3rd Squad to enter Gavrilovka from the west side, with support from one BRDM scout car (Scout 2), while Command Squad entered from the east, with support from a BRDM scout car (Scout 1). However, in the initial contact, Scout 1 was destroyed by an enemy recoilless rifle technical.

Command Squad entered the village from the east, encountering Russian interior ministry special operations troops, as well as some Wagner Group operators. As Command Squad advanced from the east, 2nd Squad and 3rd Squad advanced from the west, encountering light opposition.

Commander located and eliminated the two civilian criminal command operatives who were at the head of the separatist forces in Gavrilovka, and seized documents and a cell phone, with the task force continuing to clear the village.

As had been arranged previously, commander located the set of documents left by local friendly agents. Battalion command staff upon hearing of the successful completion of the operation, ordered the task force to withdraw and return back to base.

2nd Squad and 3rd Squad encountered heavy resistance as they drew back. Task Force commander, realizing the task force was cut off, ordered Scout 2 to begin clearing those enemy forces.

Once the enemy block was removed, commander ordered artillery smoke missions to cover the retreat of 2nd Squad, which came under heavy gunfire from Wagner Group operators and Russian militia. Command Squad moved north to spring 2nd Squad from its trap, enabling it to return to its vehicle, and to withdraw. During their trek to pull back, commander ordered a number of HE artillery attacks on inbound enemy counterattacks, which ultimately saved the operation.

Losses were moderate. 2nd Squad lost six, 3rd Squad lost 2, and Command Squad lost three. Command Squad's truck was destroyed, as was Scout 1 BRDM. Air Support 1, the gunship, was forced down due to a lack of fuel and its crew evacuated with Scout 2 BRDM.

Field counts of enemy losses included two technicals.

The documents located in the dead drop included communications from the separatist regional commanders, which outlined in broad terms the separatist plans for the Beketov region. Included in those plans were arrests, tribunals, and ultimately, executions of civilians outside the normal and acceptable legal processes.

The documents also said that the separatists would be ready to implement those plans come autumn.
