This is a capture of me playing through Super Mario Bros. Deluxe for the Game Boy Color. This is not an emulator. This footage was captured directly from my GameCube using my Game Boy Player with progressive scan mode enabled (you'll need the GameCube's component cables to do this and your model of GameCube must support component out as well). Even though I already have a playthrough posted of Super Mario Bros. on the NES, I decided to record a playthrough of this 1999 Game Boy Color port of the game to showcase the differences. I grew up with the NES in the late ’80s and played my fair share of the original Super Mario Bros., so I was a huge fan of the game. Although I didn’t typically buy or ask for remakes, I eventually asked for Super Mario Bros. Deluxe for Christmas of 1999 because the game included a port of The Lost Levels (Japan’s Super Mario Bros. 2), which I did not own. The Lost Levels had previously been released in the Super Mario All-Stars compilation on the SNES, but I preferred my original NES games, so I never asked for that compilation and only occasionally played it at other people’s houses. However, I still wanted to own the Lost Levels, and when I saw that Super Mario Bros. Deluxe would include a port of the game with graphics closer to the original Japanese version, I knew I had to get it. It was too good of a deal to pass up. When I ultimately received Super Mario Bros. Deluxe for Christmas I found that it was generally an excellent port of the original NES game with only one major flaw: a limited viewing area. Similar to some of the Sonic the Hedgehog games on Game Gear, this game leaves you vulnerable to some blind jumps and surprise attacks by enemies. Also, it has some slightly tweaked physics that cause Mario to build momentum faster, which made me accidentally overshoot platforms and die in my unsuccessful recording attempts. It took a while before I got used to the different physics. Notwithstanding these issues, this game has quite a variety of modes and some excellent sound quality for an NES port. Although the graphics are generally unchanged from the NES version, this game does have a few changes such as new animations and some color differences. There are also new sound cues. In this video, I completed the entire game in a single session without dying, although I did get hit a few times. This version is much more challenging than the original NES game, plus I was playing on an HDTV, which has some amount of input lag (minimal as it may be), so you’ll notice me occasionally screwing up some flag pole jumps and whatnot. Anyway, enjoy. Recorded with the Hauppauge HD PVR and the GameCube's component cables at 60 frames per second. This is a capture of me playing through Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Genesis. This was played on the Wii Virtual Console and recorded directly from my Wii (not the Wii U). I'm collecting all of the Chaos Emeralds in this playthrough. I’m sure this playthrough might come as a bit of a surprise to people. I have thought about posting a Sonic the Hedgehog playthrough for quite some time, but I knew it would take a lot of effort for me to memorize the game and achieve a no-death/all-Chaos Emerald run. I finally put in the effort this year. Although I have exclusively owned Nintendo systems all my life, I knew a few people who owned a Sega Genesis when I was a kid, and my cousin even owned a Game Gear, so I got to experience the other side of the 8-bit/16-bit wars during the ’90s. I was a big fan of Altered Beast, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Road Rash, and of course, Sonic. However, I don’t recall ever playing the first Sonic game as a kid. Instead, I only remember playing Sonic 2 and loving the simultaneous two-player mode with Tails. I also managed to play Sonic 2 on the Game Gear. Since I only had a subscription to Nintendo Power as a kid, I loved going to the magazine aisle in stores and reading the multi-console video game magazines such as EGM and GamePro to see what Sega and the other companies were doing. Despite Sega basically calling us Nintendo fans retards through their commercials, I loved the competition between Nintendo and Sega and used to wonder which games would be better if you compared Mario to Sonic in a head-to-head match up. In fact, I remember being incredibly excited at the prospect of a 3D Sonic game for the Sega Saturn so I could see how it would compare to Super Mario 64, but sadly, Sonic X-treme was cancelled and I lost interest in almost all of the new Sonic games once the “modern” Sonic design debuted on the Dreamcast. However, a few years into the Wii era, I decided to finally download the classic Sonic games for the Sega Genesis through the Wii Virtual Console, and I got to truly experience them for the first time. With quite a bit of struggle, I managed to beat Sonic 1 and 2 while collecting all of the Chaos Emeralds, but it was challenging. I later downloaded all of the available mainline Sonic games for the Game Gear through the 3DS Virtual Console and beat them as well. However, I still haven’t finished Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles. I think the Sonic games are a lot of fun, and the music is course excellent, but the bonus stages are a huge pain in the ass, the underwater stages suck terribly, and the first two Sonic games really could have used a save function as well. I’m not a natural Sonic player since I grew up on Mario games and I tend to be a little more methodical with trying to collect items, but I figured people might want to see how a die-hard Mario fan plays through Sonic. Since this is the original version of Sonic, there’s no spin dash available. Also, since this is the Wii Virtual Console, there’s no save state feature, though you can suspend your current game by simply hitting the home button and going back to the home menu. I have actually beaten this game before, but this is the first time posting footage on my channel. Sonic 2 for the Genesis (as well as the Game Gear) is one of the few Sonic games that I managed to play as a kid. I only had Nintendo systems growing up, but one of my friends had a Sega Genesis, so I got a play some different games at his house whenever I visited. During one of my last visits to this friend’s house I was surprised to see that he and his older brother were playing Sonic 2, and they had a group of people already gathered in his room to witness the new game. I eventually got my chance to play it, but surprisingly, I was handed the second controller so I could use the new character: Tails. Even though Tails would constantly fall behind Sonic and fly off the screen, I loved the character for the simple fact that he was invincible. Everyone took advantage of this by having me fight the bosses while Sonic stood safely off to the side. Sadly though, we didn’t beat the game. But it was a smart strategy, and a feature that Nintendo would later implement in the Super Mario Bros. games with Nabbit. Sadly, after that single day, I didn’t get to revisit Sonic 2 until almost 20 years later when I finally purchased a copy of the game on the Wii Virtual Console. Sonic 2 is a massive improvement over the first game because of the faster, flowing level design, the spin dash attack, and of course, Tails. While other people don’t seem to talk about it much, for me, this game’s defining feature is its cooperative two-player mode (I don’t mean the splitscreen vs mode). But as much as I would like to post a two-player playthrough by having someone control Tails (something I never see anyone else doing), I don’t seem to have anyone available to help with that. Perhaps I can manage that somewhere down the road with Sonic Mania. For this playthrough I collected all of the Chaos Emeralds in the first two stages to get them out of the way and to have access to Super Sonic for the rest of the game. The bonus stages took quite a bit of memorization, and this was another no-death run, so I had to put some real work into this recording over the course of a month. Enjoy. [Note: This video and description were originally posted on Youtube in January of 2022.] This is a capture of me playing through all of Super Mario Bros. without using any Warp Zones via Super Mario All-Stars on the SNES. This is not an emulator and was not played on the Wii or the Switch. This footage was captured directly from my SNES using an actual Super Mario All-Stars cartridge. As I’ve said before, I don’t typically buy remakes of games that I already own, but a decent amount of people seem to watch my Mario videos, so I started buying certain Mario remakes (such as the Super Mario Advance sequels) in order to post more footage on my channel. I had recently considered buying Super Mario All-Stars as well, so this last Christmas, Keet bought me a complete copy off eBay as a gift, which was really nice. I grew up playing the original Super Mario Bros. on the NES in the late ’80s, so I have always preferred the original game in all its 8-bit glory. However, when Super Mario All-Stars was released in 1993, my friend got a copy of the game, and I had the chance to play it. I thought it was a really cool compilation, but I never felt the need to buy All-Stars or ask for it as a gift. To me, the biggest selling points for All-Stars were the inclusion of the Lost Levels and the new save feature, the latter of which was really handy for a large game like Super Mario Bros. 3. Nintendo later re-released All-Stars on the Wii in 2010, but there were no changes made to the game. Since I prefer to play games on their original systems, and since there’s always some amount of input lag when playing on an HDTV, I decided that the original SNES cartridge was the only way to go. In this video I’m once again playing through all of Super Mario Bros. without using any warp zones and without getting hit even once. I’m also showing a bunch of secrets along the way. For the most part, this gameplay is similar to my no-hit NES playthrough. Although this is fairly challenging, it’s not the most difficult playthrough I’ve ever recorded. Also, after recording a bunch of footage with the HD PVR 2 and making comparisons, I’ve decided to revert back to my old HD PVR + DVD recorder setup because it results in sharper, more stable NES and SNES footage (N64 footage ends up being about the same). However, for any future visits to Keet’s house in Florida, I will still be using the HD PVR 2 since it’s easier than transporting a large DVD recorder. Recorded with the Hauppauge HD PVR and the official SNES S-video cable at 60 frames per second. I used a Toshiba model D-R550 DVD Recorder to upconvert the SNES's native 240p signal to 480i so that the Hauppauge could capture the console's audio/video signal. I'm using a standard SNES controller.

Here’s some more footage of Super Mario All-Stars, which I received as a gift for Christmas of 2021. This time I’m completing Super Mario Bros. 2 without dying. I grew up playing Super Mario Bros. 2 on the NES in the late ’80s, and I am a huge fan of the game. It’s one of my earliest memories of the NES, and I specifically recall playing the game with my mother. Though I prefer the original NES version in all its glory, the Super Mario All-Stars version is a neat update. The graphics (especially the backgrounds) are far more detailed, the music is more complex, and there’s a handy save feature. I have already posted playthroughs of the original NES version of Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario Advance, so I tweaked this playthrough a bit. This time I favored Luigi more than the Princess and I used the handy shortcut on level 3-3. However, I once again collected all of the mushrooms except for on the final level because you have to backtrack to get both mushrooms on that stage. Enjoy the footage. Recorded with the Hauppauge HD PVR and the official SNES S-video cable at 60 frames per second. This is part 1 of my capture of me playing through Super Mario 64 for the Nintendo 64. This is not an emulator and was not played on the Wii or Wii U Virtual Console. This footage was recorded directly from my Nintendo 64 using a real Super Mario 64 cartridge. I'm collecting all 120 stars in the game. This game has the distinction of being the first game that I was ever hyped for before its release. I started my Nintendo Power subscription in 1993, so I knew all about Super Mario 64 and the Nintendo 64 well before their release, and I couldn't stop thinking about them. I definitely wanted a Nintendo 64 on its launch day back in 1996, but since I was 12 at the time, I had no money and had to wait until Christmas. However, a few months after the September launch I managed to play Super Mario 64 at Sears. There was a line of about five or six kids in front of the system, but I managed to get my turn, and I was instantly blown away. That was the only time I got to play the game (or the system) before Christmas. The Nintendo 64 actually sold out during its initial release here in the U.S., so my mother had a lot of trouble finding one. However, shortly before Christmas, she headed over to Best Buy in the hopes of getting a system, and lucky for her (and me), they had some in stock. So I managed to receive the system, Super Mario 64 and Wave Race 64 for Christmas. I spent that entire holiday season playing through both games. Since this was one of the earliest full-3D console games, I naturally got lost in the worlds and had trouble figuring out where to go. But that only made it more exciting for me. I spent a lot of time wandering around the levels and seeing what I could discover. I also picked up the official Player's Guide to help me get all 120 stars. I'm using that same guide once again to make this playthrough more efficient. I have beaten this game several times, and I still find it fun to this day because of the fast-paced physics and the open-ended design. This game is also fun to play with different controllers, so I'm using my arcade-style joystick for this playthrough. This is being played on my original cartridge from 1996. That first save file with 120 stars is actually my original save file from that Christmas. I've kept it all these years. I'll be keeping track of the stars I obtain in each part. I'm back playing more Explore Mode. There were some really interesting levels today! Some fun, some good, some...not so good, but my favorite had to be the 1-1 Mario remake. It's Kirby time! These levels were harder than a lot of the previous ones. I love a challenge though.
