Olympics Opening Ceremony Imagery: Harmless Art Or Deliberate Message?

The opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic games has come and gone, but the controversy it generated is still raging. The imagery presented to the world during that ceremony has been called all sorts of names, from satanic to blasphemous, and etc. The organizers have since apologized, but was the ceremony just harmless art or a deliberate message?
