Hard to Challenge this man's credentials. Marine and Army sniper, special ops, sniper instructor. John may be exaggerating when he says there are less than 10 in the world like him, but that's beyond the point. This man knows what a subsonic round sounds like, how sounds through a suppressor, etc. Those were indeed rounds being shot off before and after the 9 known shots:

It so happens I ran that at 10% speed like John is saying because that's the slowest it goes on my video editor, but you can hear it at faster speeds. Beginning clip starts at 30% and you can hear the pops. This is clipped from that video. It runs at full speed in the end and you can hear the suppressed gunfire at full speed once you know what to listen for.

I thought at first maybe Dave Stewart had keys in his pocket or something clicking because there were so many. But it is what you'd think it is from watching the movies.
