How to fish: (PC)
First, have your fishing pole selected.
Next, face at any direction(preferably towards an open body of water).
Finally, hold left-click or use tool key/button. Release at desired point of the meter.

Getting a bite:
Fishing is a waiting game. When you get a bite(exclamation point), quickly use your left-click or use tool key/button to start the fishing minigame.
Otherwise your bite will escape.
