The intermediate value theorem. A function $f$ that is continuous on the interval $[a,b]$ takes on $[a,b]$ all intermediate values between $f(a)$ and $f(b)$. In other words, for any $v$ between $f(a)$ and $f(b)$, there exists $c \in [a,b]$ such that $f(c)=v$.
