Following her discovery that Sandra may have had a Moroccan royal for a relative, Mary goes through an antique trunk in an attempt to learn more about an intriguing ancestor. She discovers that her uncle, Corporal Mortecai Hurley, served in the 54th Infantry during the Civil War. Brenda is convinced by her to revise her paper about Mortecai. Not to be outdone, Sandra visits the library and discovers that Mary's uncle Mortecai was, in fact, a "coward" who abandoned his regiment during the conflict while disguising himself in the flag that was meant to resemble a dress.
