He took command of U-995 in August 1944, a time when 9 out of 10 U-Boats were killed on their first Feindfahrt. Hess and U-995 sank ships and completed five war patrols. After the war he became a lawyer and eventually a Doctor of Law. He was a great Member of Sharkhunters and was my best friend in Germany.
