Europe From Above - Roman Amphitheatre in Pula, Croatia From Above – Must-see in Europe
The Roman Amphitheatre in Pula, Croatia, is one of the most significant and best-preserved ancient Roman structures in the world.
The amphitheatre was built between 27 BC and 68 AD during the reign of Emperor Vespasian, around the same time as the Colosseum in Rome.
Like many Roman amphitheater, it was used for various public spectacles including gladiator battles, wild animal fights, and public executions.
It's an oval structure with an arena measuring about 68 by 42 meters. The exterior is made of local limestone, with three rows of arches, each with Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian columns, showcasing the evolution of Roman architectural styles.
It could seat up to 20,000 spectators. The seating was organized in a way that reflected the social hierarchy of Roman society, with the best seats reserved for the elite.
Over the centuries, the amphitheatre has survived remarkably well, though it has undergone numerous modifications. For instance, during the Middle Ages, it was used as a fortress, and parts of it were even used as a quarry for building materials.
Today, it serves as a venue for various cultural events, including the Pula Film Festival, concerts, and historical reenactments. This has helped in its preservation by keeping it an active part of the community.
The amphitheatre is one of the most recognizable symbols of Pula and Croatia, attracting tourists from around the world. Its presence speaks to the deep historical roots of the region, which was once part of the Roman Empire.
Visitors can explore the amphitheatre, walk through its corridors, and even sit in the stands to imagine the grandeur of ancient Roman games. There are often guided tours available which provide deeper insights into its history and architecture.
The Roman Amphitheatre in Pula not only stands as a testament to Roman engineering and entertainment but also as a living monument that continues to engage with modern culture, making it a must-visit for anyone interested in history or architecture.
