How to translate Exodus 34:6-7

"The Lord passed over him and the Lord proclaimed, 'The Lord, a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, great in lovingkindness and truth, keeping lovingkindness to the thousands, forgiving iniquity and rebellion and sin, but by no means leaving the guilty unpunished, avenging the iniquity of the fathers on their children and on their children's children and on their children to the third generation and on their children to the fourth generation" (Exodus 34:6-7, my translation).
