A recent study suggests that carvings chiseled into the large stone pillar 43 at Göbekli Tepe nearly 13,000 years ago may be the world's oldest sun-and-moon calendar. And the calendar may have been carved to mark a catastrophic comet strike.
Some scientists think that a cluster of comet shards may have smashed into Earth's surface around 10850 BC, and the carvings, which were likely made during that time were a way to record this event. However, the Younger Dryas impact hypothesis has been a point of contention among scholars.
