"Time is on our side, and the waiting period for our response to the criminal Zionist regime may extend longer than expected," Brig. Gen. Ali Mohammad Naeini, the spokesperson for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, said on Tuesday.

Naeini stressed that creating a state of uncertainty in Israel "is intentional, as Iran’s response will be carefully timed and different from past operations."

He was of course referring to Iran’s promised retaliation against Israel for the 31 July assassination in Tehran of Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the political bureau of Hamas.

His comments echoed those earlier this month from Hizballah leader Hassan Nasrallah, who said that making Israel wait was "part of the punishment."

The Lebanese resistance group has also vowed harsh retaliation for Israel’s bombing of Beirut just hours before the assassination of Haniyeh in Tehran.

Among those killed in Israel’s attack on the Lebanese capital was Fuad Shukr, a senior Hizballah commander.

In the meantime, the deadly, daily exchanges between Israeli forces and Hizballah fighters across the Lebanon-Israeli boundary are escalating. And as the United States sends in more of its forces, there is a growing sense in the region that a wider war may be inevitable.

All the while, Israel’s American-backed genocide in Gaza accelerates with no end in sight.
