Wat Chedi Yai and Wat Sangka Thae - Ayutthaya Histoeical Park With Drone Footage - Thailand 2024
Wat Sangka Tha วัดสังขทา
Wat Sangkha Tha is located on the city island in the southwestern part of Ayutthaya. The temple is licsted in the Somdet Phra Sri Nakharin Park. Wat Sangkha Thae and Wat Chedi Yai are nearby Wat Chao Phram and several other ruins are located just east of here.
Being part of the Somdet Phra Sri Nakharin Park the ruin has been restored by the Fine Arts Department. The site consists of two monastic structures, an ordination hall and a wihan, both with a chedi.
Two other monastic structures are also nearby. A wihan called Wat Sangkha Thae or the "Monastery of the True Monkhood" and likely a bell or drum tower.
The whole complex is surrounded by a moat. All buildings were probably originally part of one temple but early maps show them as two seperate temples.
Its historical background and period of construction are unknown with most records being destroyed during the fall of the city to the Burmese in 1767. The Royal Chronicles of Ayutthaya mention an important monk coming to this temple to meditate for good weather in 1755 at the request of King Borommakot. He was hoping to meditate and have favorable weather during the construction and dedication of another temple.
Wat Sangkha Thae วัดสังขแท้
Wat Sangkha Thae or the Monastery of the True Monkhood is located north of Wat Sangka Tha. It was probably part if that temple originally but is listed as a seperate temple.
The ruin consists of a Wihan that is bowed in the middle like a chinese junk. It was probably constructed in the late Ayutthaya style. The other building on site is a bell tower with lotus shaped openings at the top.
The historical background and period of construction of this monastic structure are unknown like the other sites in this area.
Wat Chedi Yai วัดเจดีย์ใหญ่
Wat Chedi Yai or the Monastery of the Great Chedi is located just a few hundred meters from the other two temples. It is also inside the Somdet Phra Sri Nakharin Park.
All that remains of rhis temple is a single bell-shaped chedi. The chedi has a ring of missing bricks and was expanded at one time.
Wat Chedi Yai was most likely built during the Middle Ayutthaya period, given its Sri Lankan style. No exact dates or historical information is known.
These 3 temples are located in the southwest of the island city. They are mostly unknown but worth a visit if you enjoy these temple ruins. You will be able to explore on your own away from the crowds of the more popular sites.
