Should We Be Worried? Divorce Rates in the US Are Increasing Rapidly!
The divorce landscape in the United States has undergone shifts in recent decades, witnessing a gradual decline in divorce rates. However, the figures still surpass those of the early 1970s. According to the American Psychological Association, around 40-50% of first marriages conclude in divorce, while the divorce rate for second marriages is notably higher at approximately 60-67%.
In 2019, the U.S. Census Bureau reported a divorce rate of 3.2 per 1,000 population, down from 3.6 in 2018. This translates to roughly 827,261 divorces in 2019 alone, contributing to a total of 8.3 million divorces since 2000. About 37% of marriages in 2019 ended in divorce, with 2,245,404 marriages and 827,261 divorces recorded.
The current divorce rate stands at 3.2 per 1,000 population, emphasizing the persistence of divorce as a societal phenomenon. Demographically, adults aged 25-39 experience the highest divorce rates, with a significant proportion occurring within the initial five years of marriage. Common catalysts for divorce include communication issues, infidelity, and financial challenges.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention note that the median duration of first marriages ending in divorce is 8 years, while second marriages typically endure for a median of 7 years. Occupation plays a role in divorce rates, with higher rates observed among construction workers, food servers, doctors, and salespeople.
Military personnel face a higher likelihood of divorce compared to civilians, with a 3.7% divorce rate for active-duty military members in 2018. Divorce rates also fluctuate across age groups, with those aged 25-39 experiencing higher rates compared to those aged 40-54. Late-life divorces have doubled among adults over 50 between 1990 and 2014, tripling for those over 65.
Educational background influences divorce rates, with higher rates among individuals with a high school education or less compared to those with a college education or more. Same-sex couples demonstrate a lower divorce rate (1.1%) than opposite-sex couples (2.9%), according to the Williams Institute.
The timing of divorces reveals a concentration at the end of the first five years of marriage, with notable peaks in divorce filing rates in March and August. The impact of COVID-19 has been significant, causing a spike in divorce rates as couples navigated prolonged periods of close quarters, resulting in heightened conflict and stress. Communication issues, infidelity, financial problems, substance abuse, domestic violence, and mental health issues are identified as prominent reasons for divorce.
Various factors, including age at the time of marriage, education, religious beliefs, and income level, contribute to individuals' likelihood of divorce. Those who marry at a younger age, possess lower educational attainment, lack religious affiliations, and have lower incomes are generally more prone to divorce. Women take the initiative in divorces more frequently than men, with women initiating 69% of all divorces, while men initiate 31%.According to data from the Office for National Statistics in 2019, 56% of same-sex marriages involved women. However, the divorce rate among lesbian couples was notably higher, accounting for 72% of same-sex divorces in 2019-approximately three times greater than that of gay male couples. The trend continued with a lesbian divorce rate of 78% in 2016, 74% in 2017, and 75% in 2018.
