Created for Community

God created us for community from the very beginning. In Genesis 2:18, The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”

David wrote about the blessing of being in a community in Psalms 133:1, "Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!"

In Hebrews 10:24-25, we are told the importance of being together in community,

"Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching."

As we see that day, the return of Christ, approaching, let us all turn to developing a community by reaching out to those in need, to those forgotten, to our neighbors, to that elderly couple at church or that individual sitting by themselves. Let us reach out to the widows, to the fatherless, and to those hungry for God's word.

There are people all around us looking to matter to someone. When we reach out, we are showing them that they matter to God as we are vessels of Jesus Christ.

Jesus teaches us in John 13:34-35,
"As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

In order for us to love others, we need to make an earnest effort to be in community. This means going out of our way to do so. This means reaching outside of our comfort zone. This means going outside our circle of friends and family.

This may involve volunteering at a non-profit or at a school or hospital. This may involve joining a Bible study group to support and encourage one another. This may involve getting to know our neighbors.

The common thread is reaching out to others and giving our time, compassion and the love of Christ. So let us "reach out and touch someone" as the old AT&T slogan says. We were created for community. It is our purpose, our calling and our ministry.
