Summary:
Pharaoh’s chief cupbearer and chief baker are thrown into prison due to offenses against the king. While there, they each have disturbing dreams, and Joseph, who is also imprisoned, notices their distress. He tells them that interpretations belong to God and offers to interpret their dreams.

The Cupbearer’s Dream (Genesis 40:9-13): The cupbearer dreams of a vine with three branches that bud, blossom, and produce grapes. He squeezes the grapes into Pharaoh’s cup and gives it to him. Joseph interprets this to mean that in three days, the cupbearer will be restored to his position in Pharaoh's court.

The Baker’s Dream (Genesis 40:16-19): The baker, encouraged by the favorable interpretation for the cupbearer, shares his own dream. In his dream, he is carrying three baskets of bread on his head, but birds are eating the bread from the baskets. Joseph interprets this to mean that in three days, the baker will be executed by Pharaoh, and his body will be left for the birds.

Three days later, during Pharaoh’s birthday celebration, the interpretations come true. The cupbearer is restored to his position, and the baker is executed. However, despite Joseph’s request to the cupbearer to remember him and help secure his release, the cupbearer forgets about Joseph once he is restored to his position.

This chapter highlights Joseph's God-given gift of interpreting dreams and the start of the events leading to his eventual rise in Egypt.
