Former US congressman Jason Chaffetz has slammed the US Secret Service's "complete failure" and claims it got "lucky again" in the latest attempt on Donald Trump's life.

Speaking with Fox News on Sunday, Chaffetz praised the agent who opened fire but said the Secret Service got "lucky" thanks to the witness who saw the suspect drive off in a getaway car.

"We got lucky again ... if that didn't happen we wouldn't know where the shooter was or would-be-shooter was," he said.
"This is another complete failure."

The man who fired multiple shots at Donald Trump's golf club in Florida has been pictured as the FBI probe the assassination attempt.

The alleged gunman has since been detained by authorities and identified as 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh, according to Fox News.
