LA County Deputies Shoot Man Advancing With Scissors

Los Angeles, California — On August 4, 2024, at 9:04 p.m., Lakewood Station deputies responded to a residence in the 8400 block of Quimby Street, Paramount, regarding a family disturbance and battery just occurred call. Upon their arrival, deputies contacted the victim in the driveway of the residence and observed injuries to the victim’s face. The victim said that his adult male son punched him during an argument. The male was later identified as 30-year-old Julio Cesar Palomares.

The victim escorted the deputies to the rear patio area of the residence to contact Palomares. As deputies approached an open exterior bedroom door, Palomares exited the door, retrieved a pair of scissors from his pocket, and aggressively advanced toward deputies while holding the scissors in a threatening manner. Deputies gave Palomares verbal commands to stop but Palomares continued to advance toward one of the deputies. A deputy deployed a TASER at Palomares, which was ineffective. Palomares continued to advance toward the deputies while still holding the scissors, at which time a deputy-involved shooting occurred.

Palomares was struck by gunfire and fell to the ground. Deputies ordered him to drop the scissors and he complied. Deputies approached and rendered first aid until the arrival of Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel. Palomares sustained several gunshot wounds and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The victim sustained a laceration to his left eyebrow area and abrasions to the left side of his face. Palomares’ mother sustained an abrasion to her right forearm. No deputies or other persons were injured. A pair of scissors, approximately seven inches in length, was recovered at the scene.
