Tolbert Shines On A Dark Day in Dallas

The rare bright spot in a very dark and depressing game was Jalen Tolbert, and I’m going to tell you why this play was even better for Tolbert than a catch for 39 yards.

Back to the play we have 3rd and 6 at the 50 so a pass play is very likely. We go shotgun formation with trips right.

They are going to be in man here and I believe their safeties are in cover 2, but this dude takes a gamble

We have this route combo called which really only leaves us with 2 viable options for this first down unless this guy bails into cover 3.

As we run the play we see that the safety doubles CeeDee which allows for Tolbert to play one on one ball with this corner and he wins in every way.

First and most obvious is the catch, which is a pretty unbelievable play. I’m not sure how he is able to fight through that defender and secure it but he does and then he maintains possession through contact with the ground.

The difficulty of the catch is one reason this play is better than just a 39 yard catch. The other is because he beats his defender. A better throw and this is a touchdown, which sucks to say but it’s better than an incompletion.

I have this concept in my head and I’ve never heard anyone talk about it, which is surprising because I think QBs think this way. They at least throw this way.

If you think about a completion window being a circle around the receiver you would have to place the runner towards the front of the circle because he could slow down to catch a pass at a greater rate then he could speed up to catch the pass.

And so as the QB makes this throw his obvious ideal situation would be to hit him in stride but that’s a perfect throw and while it’s not impossible it is unlikely that every throw would be perfect.

So if he has to error on one side or the other he would want to error on the under throw.

The overthrow leads to a loss of down and in this case a possible punt, but an under-thrown ball could be a completion or a pass interference which are basically the same thing. Which means first down and drive continues.

And sure an interception is more likely on the underthrown ball but most corners can’t or don’t make plays like that and your WR will usually try to protect the ball the best they can in that situation.

So really it is in the interest of QBs to under throw this ball more than it is in their interest to risk overthrowing the ball.

On to the scripture of 1 Chronicles 2, which is a genealogy of David starting with the sons of Israel, but as I was reading two spots stuck out to me and I have been thinking about them for days. Verse 30 and verse 32 says that Seled and Jether died childless, which I think is an interesting thing to include in a genealogy.

And as I have reflected on it I have realized that what these two men I imagine would have been seen as a curse. In fact, many of the people around them might have also seen childlessness as a curse… well God used that to write the Bible and tell His story.

So may we also view the darkest things in our lives this way. And ask God to redeem them so that we take what we were once ashamed of and proclaim it from the proverbial mountain top to tell of God’s goodness and mercy.

I’ll start. I was once a porn addict, but now I am 10 years sober, which was only possible for me through the work of the Holy Spirit I received when I accepted Jesus. And now I can proclaim that on the proverbial mountaintop of YouTube and trust that God will use it to His glory.
