EU response to Russia's nuclear doctrine update mocks it, but what if?

The EU has responded to Russia's nuclear doctrine update and, not unexpectedly, has not taken it seriously. The concern here is that the EU also didn't take Russia's warnings seriously before the the Ukraine invasion, so what if Russia also follows through this time?
