Where Will the Antichrist Come From? | What Does the Course Say About Idols?
Who is the Antichrist and where will this entity come from? This question has echoed through the halls of time, stirring both fear, worry, and curiosity. Yet, perhaps the answer lies not in an external figure, but in the subtle, hidden corners of our own minds. "A Course in Miracles" invites us to look deeper, beyond the obvious, to explore the idols we have created—idols that may be far more insidious than we realize.
In the teachings of the course, idols are described as entities that "accept, but never make return. They can be loved, but cannot love." These are not just physical objects or figures we worship; they are the illusions we cling to, believing they will complete us. Idols, in their essence, represent a force that thrives on secrecy, hiding in the shadows of our desires and fears. They are the manifestations of the ego’s need for specialness, for something or someone that sets us apart, above others, and yet they keep us isolated in the darkness of our own making.
The course warns us that these idols live in secrecy, hating the sunlight and happy in the body's darkness, where they can hide and keep their secrets hidden along with them. In this darkness, there is no room for true relationships, for the idols smile on no one, and those who seek their approval are never truly seen.
The ego, in its pursuit of specialness, teaches us to judge what is different, to see ourselves as superior to those we condemn. It thrives on the idea that to be 'special' is to be above others, to have something or someone that others do not. This need and perception is the root of many of the world’s conflicts and the source of much suffering.
The course teaches that specialness serves as the justification for attack, for in the ego's eyes, those who are 'beneath' the special one deserve their fate. But there is another way. The Holy Spirit, according to the course, mediates between illusions and truth, guiding us away from the darkness of idols and toward the light of understanding and compassion. The Holy Spirit’s goal is the end of dreams—the end of the illusions that idols create, and the awakening to the truth of our oneness with God and each other.
Idols, the course teaches, are mere illusions, their purpose rooted in the belief that something external can make us whole. Yet, this very belief in incompleteness is what gives rise to the need for idols in the first place. The course asks us to recognize this falsehood and to accept salvation now, as it is the gift of God—a gift that requires no idols, no specialness, but simply the acceptance of the truth that we are already whole and complete.
Let this meditation be a step toward releasing what has held you back, a journey toward the end of dreams, and the beginning of true awakening.
