Howlin' Like Dogs (Psalm 59 Blues Song)
** This blues song, "Howlin’ Like Dogs (Deliver Me, Lord)," is inspired by Psalm 59 from the World English Bible (WEB) translation. David wrote this psalm during one of the most dangerous times in his life—when King Saul sent men to watch his house and kill him. David's cry for deliverance was a desperate yet faithful prayer for God’s protection, and it became a powerful declaration of trust in God's strength and mercy.
Psalm 59 paints a picture of enemies prowling like dogs, spewing lies and waiting to strike. But David doesn't just ask for rescue—he asks God to scatter his enemies, so they would know God rules over all. Even in distress, David promises to sing of God’s strength and mercy, trusting that the Lord would make things right.
Psalm 59 (WEB)
1 Deliver me from my enemies, my God.
Set me on high from those who rise up against me.
2 Deliver me from the workers of iniquity.
Save me from the bloodthirsty men.
3 For, behold, they lie in wait for my soul.
The mighty gather themselves together against me,
not for my disobedience, nor for my sin, Yahweh.
4 I have done no wrong, yet they are ready to attack me.
Rise up, behold, and help me!
5 You, Yahweh God of Armies, the God of Israel,
rouse yourself to punish the nations.
Show no mercy to the wicked traitors. Selah.
6 They return at evening, howling like dogs,
and prowl around the city.
7 Behold, they spew with their mouth.
Swords are in their lips,
“For,” they say, “who hears us?”
8 But you, Yahweh, laugh at them.
You scoff at all the nations.
9 Oh, my Strength, I watch for you,
for God is my high tower.
10 My God will go before me with his loving kindness.
God will let me look at my enemies in triumph.
11 Don’t kill them, or my people may forget.
Scatter them by your power, and bring them down, Lord our shield.
12 For the sin of their mouth, and the words of their lips,
let them be caught in their pride,
for the curses and lies which they utter.
13 Consume them in wrath.
Consume them, and they will be no more.
Let them know that God rules in Jacob,
to the ends of the earth. Selah.
14 At evening let them return.
Let them howl like a dog, and go around the city.
15 They shall wander up and down for food,
and wait all night if they aren’t satisfied.
16 But I will sing of your strength.
Yes, I will sing aloud of your loving kindness in the morning.
For you have been my high tower,
a refuge in the day of my distress.
17 To you, my strength, I will sing praises.
For God is my high tower, the God of my mercy.
Lyrics to "Howlin’ Like Dogs (Deliver Me, Lord)"
(Verse 1)
Deliver me, Lord, from my enemies tonight,
They’re risin’ up against me, don’t let ‘em win this fight.
Bloodthirsty men, they’re lookin’ for my soul,
But I ain’t done no wrong, they’ve lost control.
(Chorus)
Oh, my Strength, I’m watchin’ for You now,
God, You’re my high tower, lift me somehow.
They’re howlin’ like dogs in the dark of the night,
But I trust in Your mercy, I know You’ll make it right.
(Verse 2)
They prowl ‘round the city, spewin’ lies with pride,
They think no one’s listenin’, but You’re on my side.
Yahweh, You laugh, You scoff at their game,
Let ‘em know You rule the earth in Your holy name.
(Chorus)
Oh, my Strength, I’m watchin’ for You now,
God, You’re my high tower, lift me somehow.
They’re howlin’ like dogs in the dark of the night,
But I trust in Your mercy, I know You’ll make it right.
(Bridge)
Scatter ‘em, Lord, don’t let ‘em bring me down,
For the sin of their mouths, let Your justice be found.
In the morning, I’ll sing of Your strength so true,
You’ve been my refuge, Lord, I owe it all to You.
(Chorus)
Oh, my Strength, I’m singin’ praises high,
For You’re my tower, the reason I can fly.
They’re still howlin’ like dogs, but they ain’t got no bite,
In Your mercy, Lord, You’ll make it right.
(Outro)
You are my mercy, You are my song,
In You, Lord, I’ll always belong.
Howlin’ like dogs, but they’ll never win,
With You, Lord, my victory begins.
