In 2011, a 17-year-old girl from Colombia embarked on a language immersion program in Bournemouth, England, ready to embrace new experiences. She found herself surrounded by classmates who enjoyed the nightlife and weekend road trips—activities that, as a minor, she couldn't partake in. Instead, her path led her to a group of practicing Muslim women, sparking a curiosity that would quietly shape her future.

Though she found their faith interesting, she never imagined it would play a role in her life. After returning to Colombia, she continued her studies, met more Muslims through exchange programs, but didn't consider reverting. It wasn’t until she was 19, during a trip to Oxford, that her interest deepened. Quiet afternoons were spent in cafés and at home, researching Islam and reading the Quran, unknowingly building a connection to the faith.

In 2014, back home in Colombia, she took her Shahada—the testimony of faith—alone, over the phone with a Muslim friend. It was a deeply personal moment. Yet, the challenges were just beginning. Surrounded by a culture unfamiliar with Islam, she felt isolated, too shy to approach other Muslims in her area. It wasn’t until she met a group of Turkish exchange students, who warmly embraced her, that she found her sense of community. A trip to Turkey for Ramadan solidified her practice, and upon returning home, she found the courage to visit the mosque—her spiritual home.

In 2016, she married a supportive husband, who encouraged her on her faith journey. Now living in New York City, surrounded by a vibrant Muslim community, she balances work, family, and her dedication to becoming a better Muslim every day.
