Recently, the Israeli government has declared its intention to crack down on tax evaders, in order to fund its ongoing war against Hamas in Gaza and Hizbullah in Lebanon. Among other measures, it is considering cancelling the 200 ILS, which is the nation's highest denomination banknote, and banning the ownership of "cash alternatives" such as gold and silver bullion. Although none of these measures is yet official, Israeli gold and silver investors are concerned. There is also speculation that cancelling cash is a prelude to the launch of a central bank digital currency (CBDC).
