From Lara Croft to Larry Croft: Netflix's Woke Tomb Raider Disaster!
Larry Croft: The Woke Raider That Netflix Ruined!
My God, we need to dive into the disastrous "direction" Netflix is taking with Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft. The latest trailer for the upcoming Tomb Raider Netflix series left many fans, including myself, utterly speechless. This isn't the fierce, iconic archaeologist we adore; instead, we’re getting a bizarre character design that resembles a man with long hair.
From what I've seen, “Larry Croft” is a fitting name for this 'new' animated portrayal. The design choices are beyond baffling—Lara now sports broad shoulders, a flat chest, and muscles that completely strip away her classic femininity. This isn’t Lara Croft; it’s Larry! It’s another sad reminder that everything woke inevitably turns to trash.
The disappointing design raises eyebrows, leading me to dig deeper into the production. It turns out the director is Joey Soloway, formerly known as Jill. Soloway is an American television creator renowned for shows like Transparent, which pushed LGBTQ themes. Now identifying as non-binary, Soloway’s agenda is painfully obvious—it's a blatant attempt to break gender norms by transforming Lara, the epitome of a strong female character, into an androgynous figure.
Fans are rightfully outraged. The community's reaction has been overwhelmingly negative, echoing terms like "woke garbage" and "gross." One fan even quipped about the “uni-boob” design, while another lamented, “What did they do to her!?” This isn’t just about how Lara looks; it sends a message that our attachment to her original character is outdated.
The problematic direction continues with Mariel Hester, now known as Ari H., who contributed as a storyboard artist on the Tomb Raider Netflix series. Previously identified as female, Ari now uses he/him pronouns. His involvement, alongside Soloway's, highlights a trend of prioritizing social agendas over the beloved traits that made these franchises iconic.
Honestly, I was initially excited for this adaptation. A series expanding on Lara’s rich lore and daring adventures had great potential. Instead, we’ve been hit with another example of woke revisionism that sacrifices quality storytelling and the essence of what made Tomb Raider a legend.
If Netflix wants to push their own narratives, fine—just leave beloved franchises alone! The Tomb Raider animated series could have captured the hearts of both new audiences and long-time fans, but the creative decisions made by Joey Soloway have only alienated those who were eager to watch.
While representation and inclusivity are essential, altering iconic characters to force these concepts isn’t the answer. It only serves to widen the gap between creators and their audience.
Now, we’re left with Larry Croft, a mere shadow of what Lara once represented, directed by someone clearly more interested in an agenda than honoring the character’s legacy. Once again, Netflix has taken a beloved franchise and “re-imagined” it into something that leaves us wishing they had just left it alone. You hate to see it!
