This lioness got harpooned by a cape buffalo during the takedown of said beast. The truth is, everytime a lion pride takes up the task of bringing down the black death, there is a non-zero chance of this happening.

Still, even with this injury, more often than not a lioness has the support of her pride. This is one of the advantages of being the only social big cats in the panthera family, and the rest of the group will provide for the injured if they are unable to help out.

However, there is not much they can do about the gaping hole in her chest or the complications that will eventually arise.
