Are actors ACTUALLY short?

If the height of an average male is 5’9” and the average height of a male actor is 5’11”, are actors actually short? And why do shorter actors thrive? The same goes for women: female actors average 5’5.4” and the average height of a woman is 5’3”. It’s true, there’s a tendency for more-popular actors being shorter, or at least in a very tight range of heights. Why? Having uniform height for your cast is a good thing to consider from a practical standpoint: you don’t have to use creative angles or height augmentations to get people to fit together on camera.
