Body Text:
higher power, Grant me the strength to release my anger and pain. Help me find compassion, even when it feels impossible... Guide me toward peace through the path of forgiveness... Help me to forgive myself and others, and when I can't or won't forgive, to become willing, to become willing, to forgive.
Forgiveness is one of the hardest things I’ve ever faced in recovery. Just three words—"I forgive you"—but they hold the weight of a thousand emotions. When I think about forgiveness, it brings up feelings of betrayal, abandonment, anger, and even grief. It’s easy to hold onto these feelings, because when someone close to me has broken my trust, it cuts deeply. It feels like I’m protecting myself by keeping that pain close, by staying angry. But here’s the truth—holding onto that pain is like drinking poison, hoping the other person will suffer. It only destroys me from the inside.
We all get hurt by people, and we all hurt others. No one is immune to pride, greed, envy, or any of the other destructive behaviors we encounter in life. But forgiveness isn’t about excusing the harm done or letting someone off the hook. It’s about freeing myself from the weight of carrying that anger and resentment every day. When I forgive, I’m not saying the hurt didn’t matter, but I’m choosing not to let it control my life anymore. I’m letting go so I can heal, move forward, and find peace.
Forgiveness is a lifesaver because it creates space for healing. Without it, I stay stuck in my pain, replaying the past and never fully living in the present. It takes away the power that the past has over me, allowing me to reclaim my peace and move forward. In the process of forgiving, I’m giving myself the gift of freedom—freedom from the past, from the anger, and from the hurt that keeps me trapped.
The benefit of forgiveness isn't for the person who caused the need for forgiveness, it is for me. I have almost no examples of what it meant to forgive in my life for the longest time, and it wasn't until much later in life that I began to practice the art of forgiveness, I lost so many years hurting unnecessarily behind holding on to transgressions, but the good news is, I forgive myself for that now as well. Praying for those who I had resentments for daily is the only sure path to freedom from holding on to past grievances
In almost all cases, they never even know I am doing this, It's really for me,,, and my serenity... Praying to forgive those who hurt me is the gift I give myself.
