The Book of Matthew - Part 11
The lesson on October 13, 2024 was the continuation of “The Book of Matthew” study with part 11. As usual, Wayne reviewed with was covered in the previous lesson where we learned of the salient points of Matthew that showed the literal structure from the book “Parable Miracle and Sign” by CH Welch. He emphasized the Son of David and the Son of Abraham. Where “from that time began Jesus to preach” – Kingdom (Matt. 4:17 KJV) to where “from that time began Jesus to show” – death and resurrection (Matt. 16:21 KJV). Then he reminded us of the three disclosures made in Matthew. The Sermon on the mount (Matt. 5-7); the Parables (Matt. 13); and Prophecy and teaching of the end (Matt. 24-25). In this lesson, we learn about the Hebrew name of Jesus which is “Yeshua” which means “salvation” (לִֽישׁוּעָתְךָ֖ קִוִּ֥יתִי יְהוָֽה׃) as shown from Gen. 49:18 KJV (and many others). We then get to the emphasis that Jesus came to be a Priest first before he comes to be King. Much of Matthew shows him fulfilling the prophecy about his role as a priest and we reviewed those prophecies in the Old Testament. Israel was looking for a King and Jesus was trying to prepare their hearts to be a kingdom of priests.
The scripture reading was from Daniel 9:24-27 (KJV) “24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. 25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. 26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. 27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.”
