OK, whoever thinks switching from front brake to rear cos you've a girl on the back, raise your hand.

The trick is to use BOTH front and rear, modulated for the way the bike shifts when braked, and adapt your riding for the conditions. Wet road? Ride slower, pay more attention. Having to brake in corners? pay better attention to your entry speed and lean angle, so you can gently accelerate thru the curve and keep the suspension settled. Got a pillion? Slow down, relax, and enjoy the ride.

Unless you've a bike that has a single drum up front, on a springer suspension that makes it bounce when you brake, and most of your bike's mass is at the back? Use. Both. Brakes. Front = progressively squeeze, so that as the front suspension compresses and gives you more traction, you can use it. Rear = modulate pressure on the pedal, so that you don't lock up the rear wheel and fishtail all over the road.
