There are 40 species of cormorants that are found all over the world near ocean coastlines and shores of inland lakes. They have dark feathers, long necks, long bills and wide wingspans. The clever cormorant’s sleekness, webbed feet, and permeable feathers allows them to sink giving them exceptional diving abilities. They can hold their breathe for up to 2 minutes when they plunge down to chase and catch their favorite food - fish. Afterwards they spread their wings so the sun can dry them out.

Cormorants are monogamous and build their nests, usually in colonies, with twigs, seaweed, grasses, sticks and guano on cliffs or in trees. After the female lays a clutch of two to four eggs both parents share the responsibility of incubating, protecting, and feeding their young. Besides being good swimmers, cormorants are graceful flyers that always have a purpose.

The adaptable cormorant has the ability to search far and wide even if the task is challenging. They symbolize perseverance, determination, resourcefulness, and abundance.
