Bert Ponds plans to fire half his employees at his lumber mill. When his nephew refuses to carry out his orders, Bert plans to fire him too. The nephew's fiancee is on "The Empire Builder," as is an abandoned baby who's been left with Bert. Bert learns about "the invisible payroll" and how his actions are hurting the economy.
