I will make you fishers of men.
Luke 5:1-11 recounts the story of Jesus calling his first disciples, including Simon Peter, James, and John. In this passage, Jesus performs a miracle where he instructs the fishermen to cast their nets into the sea, resulting in an overwhelming catch of fish. This event leads Simon Peter to recognize Jesus's divine power and prompts him to leave everything behind to follow Jesus.
Connecting this passage with Habakkuk 1:14–17, there's a parallel in the astonishment and response of the people. In Habakkuk, the prophet describes how the Babylonians sweep in and gather people like fish, capturing them in their nets. Similarly, in Luke, Jesus performs a miracle involving a great catch of fish, which astonishes the fishermen.
Both passages involve the imagery of fishing and gathering. However, while the Babylonians in Habakkuk are depicted as agents of destruction, Jesus in Luke is portrayed as a harbinger of hope and redemption. The contrast highlights the difference between the oppressive powers of the world and the liberating power of God through Jesus Christ.
When examining Luke 5:1-11 in relation to Jeremiah 16:14-16, we can see a connection in the theme of gathering people. In Jeremiah 16:14-16, the prophet Jeremiah speaks of a time when God will gather his people from all the lands where they have been scattered. This gathering signifies a restoration and a bringing together of God's people.
In Luke 5:1-11, Jesus calls his disciples, symbolizing the beginning of the gathering of people to follow him. This gathering extends beyond just the immediate disciples to all those who would later become followers of Jesus. Just as God gathers his people in Jeremiah, Jesus gathers his followers in Luke, indicating a fulfillment of the prophecy of gathering and restoration spoken of by the prophets, including Jeremiah.
