Dog Breeds Most Affected by Diseases: See If Your Pet Is on the List.
Choosing a pet should be done with great care and attention, considering not only the dog's personality, but also its health throughout life. Some dog breeds, due to their genetics and physical characteristics, are more likely to develop certain diseases. Veterinarians identify the breeds that are most predisposed to health problems, requiring extra care from their owners.
English Bulldog
Known for their robust appearance, English Bulldogs suffer from a series of respiratory problems due to their short-snouted anatomy (brachycephaly). In addition, they are subject to skin problems, hip dysplasia and eye problems.
Pug
Pugs, another brachycephalic breed, face serious respiratory problems. They are also prone to developing obesity, eye problems such as corneal ulcers and dermatological diseases.
German Shepherd
Despite being very popular dogs, German Shepherds have a high incidence of hip and elbow dysplasia. In addition, they are susceptible to digestive problems and autoimmune diseases.
Golden Retriever
This adorable breed is more susceptible to cancer, especially in old age. Golden Retrievers also frequently suffer from hip dysplasia, heart problems and skin allergies.
Cocker Spaniels
are known to develop skin problems and ear infections frequently. In addition, they can suffer from eye diseases, such as cataracts, and hormonal disorders, such as hypothyroidism.
Dachshund
Famous for their long bodies and short legs, Dachshunds are predisposed to spinal problems, such as herniated discs, which can lead to paralysis. They are also prone to obesity, which aggravates these problems.
Keeping these breeds healthy requires a routine of preventative care, such as regular veterinary visits, specific exams and a balanced diet. Furthermore, exercising according to the limitations of each breed is essential to avoid overweight problems, especially in breeds such as the Pug and Dachshund, which are more prone to obesity.
Although these breeds are charming, owners should be aware of the health conditions to which these dogs are more predisposed. Making an informed choice and regular veterinary check-ups are essential to ensure a long and healthy life for these animals.
