The Oklahoman 12/30/1995: A statement issued by the Netherlands' justice ministry, but later repudiated, touched off a flurry of news reports Friday identifying an accused rare document thief as a third suspect in the April 19 Oklahoma City bombing.

The U.S. Justice Department quickly denied the news stories, and the Netherlands Justice Ministry later withdrew its statement.

"The bottom line is the story ... is untrue," said Carl Stern, spokesman for the U.S. Justice Department in Washington, D.C. Stern was responding to several published reports, including one by Reuters news service, which quoted a Dutch Justice Ministry spokesman as saying the United States had requested the extradition of Daniel Spiegelman, 32, on suspicion of involvement in the Oklahoma City bombing.

Two men, Timothy McVeigh, 27, and Terry Nichols, 40, already have been charged with the bombing that resulted in 169 deaths.

The Dutch spokesman was quoted as saying Spiegelman was "suspected of delivering weaponry to the suspects of the Oklahoma bombings. " Spiegelman was arrested in the Netherlands on June 8 and the United States first requested his extradition in December on suspicion of trading in stolen manuscripts. Then, a week ago, extradition was requested accusing Spiegelman of weapons trafficking with suspects of the Oklahoma attack, the spokesman was quoted as saying.
