Jason Momoa's character, Garrett "The Garbage Man" Garrison, is one of the film's four misfits dealing with everyday struggles who are unexpectedly transported into the world of Minecraft. The other three characters include Henry (Sebastian Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers), and Dawn (Danielle Brooks). Once there, they must learn to navigate the bizarre, cubic world, while also defending themselves from menacing creatures like Piglins and zombies. Soon, they ally with an expert crafter, Steve (Jack Black), and eventually embark on a magical quest to return home.

In light of director Jared Hess' comments, much more is known about Garrett's backstory than the other three characters in the Minecraft Movie. He's a former world champion video gamer from the late 1980s, but despite his gaming experience, he knows little about the world of Minecraft, with the director calling him a "noob." Garrett is also the oldest of the film's four main characters, meaning that the two younger characters, Henry and Natalie, likely have some prior experience playing Minecraft.
