Unbroken Chain: A Tribute to the Grateful Dead's Phil Lesh (almost 7 hours!)

Phil Lesh, The late bass player for the Grateful Dead, was juggarnuat. His thunderous bass playing, informed by his composer level classical training, and years spent under the tutelage of Luciano Berio, the father of avant garde jazz, was a sense of joy and wonder for millions. The loss of Phil is unspeakably sad, and for me, it's deeply personal. I was honored to have several interactions with Phil, including what was likely one of his proudest moments. I found myself unexpectedly sitting elblow to elbow with Phil at his sons first public performance. Afterwards, Phil ws generous enough to spend 10 minutes or so talking to me. When I told him how the Dead had saved my life, he teared up. I'll never forget Phil's warmth and support. that moment is one of my most treasured memories. Later, another connection to Phil resulted in a performance with Jay Lane (Primus, Dead and Co.). Jay was the original Primus drummer, and both my bass player and drummer were huge fans. And of course, I was a Deahead, and Jay had been the go to drummer for Bobby and Phil, so playing with Jay was an incredible experience for all of us. I can't begin to express my gratitude for Phil and the Grateful Dead. I sincerely don't think I would have made it through my twenties without the Dead, and none of us, Deadhead or otherwise, would be who we are without them.
