Bundeswehr We. Serve. Germany.

Overview
The Bundeswehr is made up of the following branches of the armed forces: Army (land forces), Air Force (air force) and Navy (naval forces) as well as the organizational areas: Joint Support Service as a "service provider" and Central Medical Service for medical care.

According to Article 87a of the Basic Law, the federal government sets up armed forces for defense. However, defense today encompasses more than the traditional defense at the country's borders against a conventional attack. It includes the prevention of conflicts and crises, the joint management of crises and post-crisis care.

Mission of the Bundeswehr

The Bundeswehr
- protects Germany and its citizens,
- ensures Germany's ability to act in foreign policy,
- contributes to the defense of allies,
- contributes to stability and partnership in the international context
- and promotes multinational cooperation and European integration.

Tasks of the Bundeswehr

Against this background, the Bundeswehr carries out the following interlocking tasks:
- national defense as alliance defense within the framework of the North Atlantic Alliance;

- international conflict prevention and crisis management - including the fight against international terrorism;
- participation in military tasks within the framework of the EU's Common Security and Defense Policy;
- contributions to homeland security, i.e. defense tasks on German territory and administrative assistance in cases of natural disasters and serious accidents, for the protection of critical infrastructure and in the event of internal emergencies;
- rescue and evacuation as well as hostage rescue abroad;
- partnership and cooperation as part of multinational integration and global security cooperation in the sense of modern defense diplomacy;
- humanitarian aid abroad
