After they entered the land of Canaan, the Tabernacle was set up in Gilgal. After the division of the land among the twelve tribes, it was moved to Shiloh, where it remained for the period of the Judges 400 years or so.
A Levite male of any birth order redeemed one firstborn Israelite male who is one month or older. There were 22,000 Levite males, but there were 22,273 firstborn of the rest of the Israelites. The problem now that simply weren’t enough Levite males to redeem every Israelite firstborn. So, the LORD tells HIS people what to do.
After 30 days, 1 lunar cycle, they would redeem that son back from GOD by going to the priesthood and paying a Redemption price. By doing this the firstborn son was now no longer obligated in service to the priesthood, he was redeemed from that. This was only the firstborn if a man had several sons it was only the first one born that is in view here.
In NUM CH 8 we will see that the Levites entered their service at 25 years of age and after 5 years of training or preparation at the age of 30 they would officially be in the priesthood. We see that in NUM 8 that the age is 25. That would also match as from that age 25 to 30 was indeed a preparation for the service which began at 30.
