Dragon Age: The Veilguard Flops – Terrible Preorders & Disastrous Sales
Dragon Age: The Veilguard" faced a rocky start with staggering pre-order cancellations and underwhelming launch-day stats, leaving fans and analysts wondering if BioWare’s latest installment is losing its magic. According to insider reports, approximately 14% of all physical pre-orders for Dragon Age: The Veilguard were canceled in the final days leading up to the release—a significant hit for such a high-profile franchise. YouTuber Endymion shared intel from a retail insider, who revealed the alarming details: out of 6,793 physical pre-orders across a major U.S. retailer with 900 stores, 956 pre-orders were canceled across all platforms.
The breakdown showed each edition took a hit: the Deluxe Xbox version saw 108 cancellations out of 695 pre-orders, the Standard Xbox edition had 128 cancellations from 885, the Deluxe PS5 edition saw 254 cancellations out of 1,872, and the Standard PS5 edition lost 466 orders from 3,341 pre-orders. This means almost 15% of each version saw last-minute cancellations, indicating a substantial dip in consumer interest for Dragon Age: The Veilguard right before launch.
Further amplifying concerns, it’s reported that Veilguard didn’t even reach 200,000 total pre-orders, combining both physical and digital. For a blockbuster series like Dragon Age, which traditionally has a strong following, these numbers are disappointing. Comparisons to other recent releases only make this performance look worse. While Metaphor: ReFantazio reported over 1 million copies sold within the first 24 hours, The Veilguard hasn’t even crossed the 500,000 mark on Steam. Industry analytics platforms like PlayTracker estimate the game has moved only 163,000 copies, while VG Insights reports 349,800, and Gamalytic shows 479,500 copies at most—far from a success by AAA gaming standards.
Adding to the bleak picture, Dragon Age: The Veilguard had a peak concurrent player count of 89,418 on launch weekend, only for it to drop a staggering 26.5% by Monday, falling to 65,639 players. EA and BioWare, typically eager to share sales successes, have stayed silent on official sales data, which has only fueled speculation of underperformance. Notably, they also confirmed there would be no downloadable expansions or additional content for The Veilguard, a rare decision that underscores their shift of resources toward Mass Effect.
